How to Ship Cards Safely: The Complete Packaging Guide

You sold a card, packed it in a regular envelope, and three days later the buyer messages you: "Card arrived bent." Shipping mistakes cost you the sale, the card, and your reputation. Here's how to ship cards right every time.

Raw Singles (Under $20)

Penny sleeve, then toploader, then tape the top of the toploader shut (tape on the toploader, not the sleeve — you don't want adhesive touching the card). Place the toploader in a team bag or small resealable bag. For PWE (plain white envelope) shipping, sandwich the toploader between two pieces of cardboard and tape it in place. Write "Non-Machinable — Do Not Bend" on the envelope. This method works for USPS Standard Envelope shipping at around $1.

Raw Singles ($20+)

Same prep as above, but skip the PWE. Use a bubble mailer instead. The extra padding and tracking that comes with First Class Package shipping ($3–4) is worth it for cards over $20. For cards over $50, consider adding a "Fragile" sticker and extra cardboard padding.

Graded Slabs

Wrap the slab in a layer of bubble wrap. Place it in a small box — not a bubble mailer, as slabs can crack if the mailer gets bent. Fill any empty space with crumpled paper or packing peanuts so the slab doesn't shift during transit. Ship via USPS Priority or First Class Package with tracking. For slabs over $100, add insurance and require signature confirmation.

Bulk Lots

Bulk cards go in a card box (the standard 200, 400, or 800 count boxes work). Fill the box snugly — cards should not slide around. If there's extra space, fill it with cardboard dividers. Place the card box inside a slightly larger shipping box with padding on all sides. Ship via USPS Priority Flat Rate when weight makes it cost-effective.

Tracking and Insurance

Always provide tracking for anything over $10. For cards over $50, add insurance through USPS or a third-party insurer like Shipsurance. For cards over $200, require signature confirmation. The small cost of insurance and signature confirmation is nothing compared to a lost or stolen package claim.

Communicate

Send the tracking number as soon as you ship. Message the buyer when you drop it off at the post office. When tracking shows delivered, follow up to confirm they received it. This level of communication is what earns five-star Speed and Communication scores on your mybadge reviews.
